What Does Visa Sponsorship Actually Mean?

When an employer sponsors your visa, they take legal responsibility for bringing you into the country as their employee. They pay the immigration fees, the work permit costs, and in most cases they also pay for your flight and your first months of accommodation. You arrive and start work. There is nothing for you to pay.

In Canada, the employer must first get an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) certificate from the Canadian government. This proves they cannot find a local worker to fill the job. Once they have the LMIA, they can legally offer the position to a foreign worker and support the visa application. In New Zealand the employer must be Accredited with Immigration New Zealand before they can hire internationally. In the UK employers need a Sponsor Licence to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to a foreign worker.

All the employers listed on this site have completed these requirements. They are ready to hire now and they are looking for workers exactly like you.

Salary Ranges & Compensation by Country

One of the biggest questions people ask is: what will I actually earn? Here is a realistic guide based on current job postings and government wage data:

  • Canada (LMIA jobs) — Entry-level farm workers earn CAD $16.55–$22/hr (minimum LMIA wage). Caregivers earn CAD $19–$28/hr. Skilled construction trades earn CAD $28–$45/hr. Annual range: $34,000–$90,000 CAD.
  • New Zealand (AEWV) — The minimum AEWV wage is NZD $29.66/hr. Farm workers with the RSE scheme earn NZD $24–$30/hr plus free housing and transport. Engineering and construction roles pay NZD $40–$60/hr.
  • UAE (Employment Visa) — Salaries are completely tax-free. Construction roles pay AED 2,500–5,000/month plus housing. Engineers earn AED 8,000–22,000/month. All employers are required to provide transport and medical insurance.
  • UK (Health & Care Worker Visa) — Care workers earn GBP £11–15/hr. Senior care and nursing roles earn £16–25/hr. Many employers include accommodation or housing allowance plus full relocation support.

How to Apply Successfully

Write a Strong Cover Letter

Tell the employer why you want to work in their country and what skills you bring. Keep it short, 3–4 paragraphs. Mention your experience, your availability and that you are ready to relocate immediately.

Get Your Documents Translated

If your certificates and work records are not in English, get them certified translated before you apply. Canada, New Zealand and the UK immigration departments will require official translations.

Never Pay for a Job Offer

Every legitimate employer-sponsored job is free to apply for. If anyone asks you to pay for a job offer letter, a work permit or to reserve a slot, it is 100% a scam. Report it and move on.

Check Requirements Before Applying

Some roles require trade certifications, nursing licenses or a clean driving record. Read each job listing carefully and only apply if you genuinely meet the requirements. This saves your time and the employer’s time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a travel visa before I can apply? No. You apply for the job first. Once an employer selects you and issues a formal job offer, then the visa process begins. You never need to have a visa before applying to a sponsored position.

Which countries are easiest for Nigerians to get sponsored to work in? Canada and New Zealand have the most active LMIA and accredited employer programs that recruit from Nigeria and other African countries. The UAE also hires significant numbers of West African workers, especially in construction and hospitality. The UK’s Health and Care Worker visa is very popular for Nigerian nurses and care workers.

How many jobs can I apply for at once? You can apply to as many as you qualify for. Applying to multiple listings increases your chances. Most employers do not mind if you are also applying elsewhere — what matters to them is whether you are qualified and genuinely ready to move.

What happens after I get a job offer? The employer or their immigration lawyer will guide you through the visa application process. You will typically need to submit your passport, educational certificates, medical check results and a police clearance certificate. The employer pays the visa fees and your arrival costs.
